Title used by the rulers of Bulgaria (q.v.), and by the rulers of other Turkish peoples from the central Asian steppe (q.v.), e.g., the Avars and Khazars (qq.v.). It is synonymous with khan, although khan is preferred by modern scholars for the pre-Christian rulers of Bulgaria (q.v.).
